What are non-surgical cosmetic treatments?

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments refer to a group of minimally invasive treatments that are used to treat areas of the face and body. The two main types of treatments are wrinkle reducing treatments and contouring and volumising treatments.

Wrinkle treatments relax the overactive facial muscles that cause fine lines and wrinkles, while contouring and volumising treatments replace volume to plump out the skin and enhance the appearance of facial features. In Australia, non-surgical cosmetic treatments can only be administered by registered medical professionals with training in the field of aesthetic medicine.

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are not permanent. They are temporary treatments that can last for different durations depending on the type of product used.

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments are generally safe and effective when performed by a qualified and experienced medical professional. However, as with any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects that should be considered before undergoing any treatment.

During your consultation, the potential risks and side effects of your chosen treatment will always be disclosed and discussed to identify ways to prevent them from occurring and managing them if they do occur.

No, you do not. If you decide you do not wish to repeat a treatment, the effect will simply lessen over time. Your skin will be left in the same condition it was before treatment; it will not be any more wrinkled than it was before treatment. Some products stimulate new collagen growth, which may lead to long-lasting improvements in skin volume. It is important to know your face will not look worse for having had some treatments.

Each individual is unique, so the treatment that works best for you may be completely different from what suits your friend. Cosmetic injectables refer to a range of treatments designed to support a refreshed, rejuvenated appearance. They can include muscle relaxants and dermal fillers, depending on individual goals and professional advice.

Anti-wrinkle injections use a prescription-only medicine to temporarily relax specific muscles. This can help soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Dermal fillers, on the other hand, are gel-like substances used to restore volume, enhance contours, and hydrate the skin.

Muscle relaxants work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to targeted muscles. This action can help reduce the repetitive movements that contribute to wrinkles and fine lines. Treatments are prescription-only and must be administered by a qualified health professional after consultation.

Common areas include forehead lines, frown lines between the eyebrows, and crow’s feet around the eyes. Treatment suitability and goals are discussed during a personalised consultation with a qualified practitioner.

Dermal fillers are commonly used to:

  • Restore lost volume (such as cheeks or under eyes)
  • Define and enhance lips
  • Support facial symmetry
  • Improve hydration of the skin
A full assessment is required to ensure suitability for treatment.

The longevity of cosmetic injectable treatments varies depending on the individual, the product used, and the treatment area. Generally:

  • Muscle relaxants may last 3–4 months
  • Dermal fillers can last from 6 to 18 months
